Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration can be frustrating because we count on good macular vision to perform daily tasks of living. Our best vision is used for seeing faces, reading, discerining colors, and driving.
Our best vision is related to an important structure in the eye known as the macula. Excellent macular vision is precious. The macula is the most sensitive part of the retina. It is the most important part of the retina responsible for seeing our best. Without good macular function our vision would be severely compromised.
Good macular vision is essential for reading. Macular degeneration can cause a blurred spot or distortion when reading, seeing faces, or viewing street signs. Distortion in patients with macular degeneration is often described as crooked or wavy lines. Imagine the frustration at setting aside time for reading, enjoying family, and engaging hobbies, without clear macular vision.
Fortunately, we now have treatments and optical devices to help vision that we did not have just a few years ago. Macular degeneration is now treatable; patients that would otherwise suffered significant loss of vision are now able to maintain and in many cases improve their macular vision with timely and appropriate treatment.
