Definition of Macular Viison
The macula is the most important part of the retina. The macula is made up of millions of highly developed cells known as cones. The macula is responsible for receiving and processing light rays that enter the central portion of our visual field. The cones in the macula change the light rays into electrical impulses that travel through the optic nerve and into our brain substance.
The processing of light focused on the macula accounts for our best vision; vision that is used for seeing fine, delicate objects and vision that we use for reading. The macula is also responsible for seeing colors. Macular vision is therefore our most refined vision that we use for seeing detail and for reading.
Macular vision is essential to have good vision. Without good macular vision it would be impossible to see 20/20. Macular vision is also described as central vision. Without central vision our vision would be 20/200 or worse.
